WHY IS ENGLISH TOO DIFFICULT FOR NON-ENGLISH MAJOR?
Nowadays our country is step by step to integrate with the world, so people have a lot of chance to find their jobs. However to be found a good job with high salary, the first factor is foreign language especially English. In recent research, it is proved that Vietnamese students who are non-English major especially technical majors feel too difficult to study English. So what the reasons make them difficult to study English?
The first important cause is that some students have wrong attitude about studying in English. Some students think that English is not important subjects, so they almost don’t spend their time on studying English. Most of students study grade A and B, so for them English is like a compulsory subject which they have to study to enough credits to be graduated. They don’t review English during a semester or longer until the exams come near. Gradually, their English knowledge will be lost, which leads them become more and more difficult to study English. My brother is an example. He says that: “English isn’t important. By choosing any answers, I pass many English exams so we needn’t study English.” Other students know that English is important but they think that at this time they should spend time on deepening their professional knowledge and after graduating they can work and study English at the same time. So Instead of spending 1 hour on studying English, they use that time just study their majors. When they have exam, they only need to cheat or copy their friend to enough mark to pass. With this way, English will become more and more difficult for them.
Another reason makes students difficult to study English is teaching styles. Some English teachers have boring teaching styles, so students seem not to be interested in English. English is a foreign language so if teachers don’t know how to attract students’ attention, the classes are boring and students don’t want to concentrate on the lessons. And students’ studying isn’t effective. For example, during grammar classes, teachers just sit at teacher tables and assign exercises with students and until the end of periods, teachers read the answers. How do students feel? Some studious students try to do exercises but gradually they are discouraged and want to stop studying. Other students feel tired and fall asleep. So they can’t apprehend the lessons. Beside, some teachers give too difficult requires. As we know that most of students study grades A and B, hence they don’t have more English knowledge even basic one. When teachers give difficult exercises, students feel discourage because they can’t finish assigned exercises. After these problems are repetitive, students think that though how they try, they also couldn’t understand anything. As the result, they ignore and give up studying English. In the end, students also feel difficult when they study English.
Finally, English itself is a complex language. It has many vocabularies. In order to do some exercises, students have to have a little word to understand contents. But technical students couldn’t learn by heard English words. Maybe they’re good at machines knowledge, but they’re afraid of English vocabularies. Like studying theory subjects, students often feel sleepy when they study new words. That is the reason why they can’t improve or study well English. Furthermore, English grammars are complicated especially tenses. Some tenses are really the same others, so students are quite difficult to distinguish. Although students know definition of each tense, when they use, they also feel puzzle. Using wrongly many times, many students think that English is too difficult for them to study, and it’s useless to go on studying English. Therefore in English classes, some students don’t pay attention to the lesson or other students even don’t attend. With situation, how are students’ English? It’s easy to recognize that students are still bad at English.
In conclusion, non- student English majors have to face many difficult problems when they study English. However, English is an international language and it affects many aspects of their future job. So from now students should try their best to improve their English.
